This page is a collection of software that the Help Desk frequently uses to resolve common problems. This page will stand as a sort of 'virtual tool shed' for said software.
Cisco Clean Access Agent requires your computer to have the latest patches from WindowsUpdate. If you've patched your computer but are still unable to log in to Clean Access, right click and save this link to your desktop and run it. If this fails, you can get the list commonly missing patches here - try installing them all. If you still can't connect, get Flash. If you still can't log on to Clean Access, call the Help Desk at extension HELP (x4357).
Windows Software
Spyware/Adware Removal Tools
Microsoft's Windows Defender - Microsoft came out with a tool to replace Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Safer Networking's Spybot - Search and Destroy. In our experience, Microsoft's tool is a bit more comprehensive than its counterparts. However, it is not perfect - for these rare situations we've included links to two free alternatives below.
Microsoft's tool only works with Windows 2000, XP, or 2003, so for ME, 98, 95, or NT4, download these three:
Spybot - Safer Networking's Spybot - Search and Destroy (v1.4)
Google Toolbar - If you only have popup problems in Internet Explorer, install the google toolbar, which has a built-in popup blocker
VPN Client Software
Windows Client
Academic Client - Cisco VPN client for accessing Academic resources.
Admin Client - Cisco VPN client for accessing Academic and Administrative resources from off campus.
On campus Admin Client - Cisco VPN client for accessing Administrative resources while on campus.
Misc. Software
Clean Access - We use this program to authenticate that you are really you - The logon information is your standard CONNCOLL login and password (its the old 'Smart Enforcer').
Windows XP service pack 2 - XP Service Pack 2 is essential to not only run a secure system, but also to logon to the Connecticut College network.
Mozilla Firefox - Have pesky spyware or get excessive popups? Use Mozilla's Firefox web browser instead of Internet Explorer and wave your problems goodbye. (v2.0.0.7).
WinAce - Need to extract that Zip, RAR, ACE, LZH, etc? WinAce can handle them all.
FileZilla FTP client - A free(ware), simple, intuitive file transfer client that supports FTP & FTP over SSH (SCP).
Other Fixes
AimFix - Install this fix if you are infected with one of the dreaded aim viruses.
ZoneFix - Install this if you have a 'my computer' zone in internet options (on the security tab). There should ONLY be 'Internet', 'Local intranet', 'Trusted sites', and 'Restricted sites'.
DLL Re-register script - A student at the help desk wrote a script that will fix the strange problem of certain websites and Windows dialog boxes being blank.
Windows Update fix script - This batch file will unregister/reregister/etc all the Windows Update related files.
Install shield fix - Install this if you're having issues on your Windows based PC that stops you from installing software because of a 'module' issue
PnP Enumerator Re-install - This will help you reinstall the PnP enumerator which can cause your sound to break. Just tell it to install an 'other' or 'system' device and look in c:\temp (after you run the script)
Winsock (Windows Socket) fix tool - This is a good program to install if you are having problems getting an ip (via DHCP). Download this from another computer and copy it to yours with a floppy disk, burned cd, or usb thumbdrive.
Mac Software
Wireless authentication certificate - If you want to use wireless on a Macintosh computer, you need to add this file to your keychain. Just download it to your desktop and double click it - the password you are prompted for when you install it is your login password FOR YOUR COMPUTER, not your CONNCOLL login id.
OSX 10.4 Client - Cisco VPN client for accessing Academic and Administrative resources.
Macintosh Clients for other OSX flavors.
Academic Client - Cisco VPN client for accessing Academic resources.
Admin Client - Cisco VPN client for accessing Academic and Administrative resources from off campus.
On campus Admin Client - Cisco VPN client for accessing Administrative resources while on campus.
